Outdoor-School Darmstadt

About us

Klaus Berger founded a project called “forest kids” in 1996, doing environmental education and conservation programmes for children. Over the years, many people became interested. Educators, students, social workers and parents offered their help. So the Outdoor-School Darmstadt was founded in 2003 by a team of interested people.

In 2005 Mathias Schattenfroh, a good friend and excellent kindergarten-teacher, became part of the team. At the moment we have 12 regular school kids groups and about 10 kindergarten groups. That´s more than 300 children coming regularly 1 or 2 times a month for different activities and programs out in the forests.

The idea

Destruction of nature is one of the evils of our time and conservation is most important for the survival of humans and the whole planet. Learning how to do so is essential and starting early makes it much easier. So our idea is teaching children about nature and conservation in a way, they can understand and enjoy. To learn lots in an interesting way, we founded regular starting groups out in the forests, where children can come over years, if they like. To make it interesting, we packed our program with lots of adventure, games and other activities, like rock- and tree-climbing, making bows and arrows, cooking with herbs, building our own camps with shelters or tents, making fire in wintertime, watching animals ... In all these activities, we have packed our one main message:

Have fun while keeping  in touch with nature and helping to conserve it.
